Probably the thing to do is to begin chart classifications with the smallest possible patterns.
Thus:

tiny cliffs, small cliffs, medium cliffs, large cliffs, extra large cliffs
cliff bottom children, small, large, extra large

so the tiny cliff category ... well, it might only have very tiny children
small cliffs might have tiny and small children
and so on

i've got this backward again already!
the smallest pattern is a child: a short bar next to a long bar
derelict orphans are far below a long bar
orphans are below a long bar
first children are at the bottom of the long bar
second children are in the middle of a long bar
third children are at the top of a long bar
fourth children are above a long bar
fifth children are far above a long bar

children can also be below, at the bottom of, in the middle of, at the top of, or above other patterns, not just long bars, so, rivers, ramps
